Crumbling Empire Exhibition

AIGA San Diego is pleased to promote the following community event as we think it may be of interest to our members; this event is not hosted by AIGA.

The San Diego Soviet Poster Show was assembled in 1988 to launch the AIGA/SD. Selected posters from that collection along with extensive works of Shepard Fairey, will be included in the upcoming Wende Museum exhibition, CRUMBLING EMPIRE. In coordination with Ron Miriello and AIGA San Diego, the Wende Museum in Culver City, will display Soviet paintings from the Tom and Jeri Ferris Russian Collection. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a circle of 38 Moscow-based artists painted 234 iconic works to be printed as posters, but only a handful of them were actually made into posters. The paintings from the collection of the Wende Museum, sketch a critical and ironic picture of communism in general and of Soviet history in particular, documenting the population’s fading trust in the system during the last years of the Soviet Union. CRUMBLING EMPIRE will feature 10 glasnost and perestroika era posters on loan from Ron Miriello and the AIGA San Diego.

The exhibition opening is February 10 and runs until June 2, 2019.
