Design lover. Coffee lover. Beer lover. (Sounds like a lot of us!)
Join AIGA SD as we hear from the founder of Young Hickory who successfully infused all three of his loves into one creative concept. Owner Clay Summers will share his journey transitioning from a career in graphic design to running a full-fledged coffee and beer cafe. Join us to learn how his design experience informed his one-of-a-kind business!

Afterward, we invite you to a private tour of the I.D.E.A. District where Young Hickory’s second location is housed. I.D.E.A. District is an initiative that began over four years ago, bringing to life the idea for new community in the upper East Village founded on the pillars on innovation, education, design and arts.

About Clay Summers
Clay has been a San Diego resident since 2004. The Oklahoma native grew up in a rural farming community, but was drawn to the graphic design field after high school. After spending 10+ years as both a corporate and self-employed designer, he decided to make a career change and open the flagship coffee and beer concept in 2013, along with a second location in the I.D.E.A. District in 2018. When he’s not operating the cafes, he enjoys hiking, spending time with friends and hanging out with his dog, Jet.

About Young Hickory
With locations in North Park and East Village’s I.D.E.A. District, Young Hickory offers local espresso & drip coffee by Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, local pastries by Bread & Cie, house-made panini sandwiches and salads, plus a wide selection of canned craft beer.
