The best books challenge our preconceived notions and open our minds. They build worlds—some resembling our own and some we’ve yet to discover. As part of the Mingei International Museum’s summer series called Cover to Cover, AIGA SD and the Mingei invite you to learn how books can lead us into new adventures, new truths, entreating us to new possibilities. Join us on this typographic adventure—you could meet a “type” that will open up intriguing conversation and a world of inspiration!
We’ll have a trunk show throughout the day, and a complimentary happy hour at 5 p.m. with beer, wine and snacks. The formal program will begin at 6 p.m., seating is limited.
Trunk Show (12 – 8 p.m.) – Shop from a colorful, bold and lively selection of works by Brazilian typography artist and graphic designer, Yomar Augusto. Yomar’s works display a unique mix of calculated pattern and spontaneous edge. Browse through his paintings and mixed media works small and large and find a vibrant piece to call your own!
Pre-Program Live Art (5 p.m.) – Experience art making up close as typography artist and graphic designer Yomar Augusto demonstrates his craft. Yomar Augusto, originally from Brazil, recently relocated to Southern California after managing his studio in New York City. Yomar also presents commercial and conceptual projects with solo exhibitions in Asia, Europe, North and South America.
Main Program (6 p.m.) – Presented in partnership with AIGA SD, San Diego State University’s Professor Emerita Susan Merritt will focus on high points in the evolution of type among the historical volumes in VOLUMINOUS ART – Treasures from San Diego’s University Libraries, as well as highlight some of the inventive typographic musings among the artists’ books. Sidebars with additional information will help contextualize the selected books and further an understanding of their significance.
